Jelka is a house project in Linz and part of the habiTAT. We are committed to self-managed and affordable housing. With our event space we also want to support political engagement and communal forms of action.

About us
“The houses to those who live in them.”
We, the Jelka house project, will withdraw the house in which we live from the speculative housing market. The purchased house will then be managed collectively. As part of habiTaT, the Austrian “Mietshäuser-Syndikat”, we act according to the principles of solidarity-based economy and collective management of housing. Profit made from private ownership of housing is ruled out. We are committed to self-managed and affordable housing.
In addition, in our house we create spaces for political, artistic and social projects. It is especially important to us that the use of our rooms is managed in accordance with the principles of solidarity – financially as well as organizationally.
We are a group of currently 8 people who live together. We organize ourselves in a grassroots democratic way and coordinate our work in plenums and working groups. As a project we share our resources and possibilities with external people and groups. We follow the principles of diversity and equality. We position ourselves against capitalism, fascism, racism and clearly stand for feminism and sustainability.

On 30.03.2022 we were allowed to present our project in the report “Dok 1: Living in Luxury. Who can afford that?” on ORF 1. In an interview with Lisa Gadenstätter, Matthias and Karin explain why we want to implement our project and how the will finance it.
Our house
In total, the house has a living area of about 480 m2 and a small garden. Currently we occupy 3 floors in 3 shared apartments. On the ground floor there is a commercial space occupied by another tenant. In addition, there is about 30 m² of interior space available for a variety of uses and a spacious basement that (still) requires renovation.
With our “association room” we would like to support political activities and communal forms of action.

Association room
Our association room allows us to gather for meetings and workshops. We also offer it to other groups for shared use.

If you’re looking for a space to implement your ideas or projects, this might be the place for you!
The room is
- 26sqm in size.
- centrally located.
- easy to reach by public transport.
- organized in accordance with the principles of solidarity and self-administration.
We make the room available to political and civil society groups. The room also has a kitchen and a bright loggia. The room is equipped with folding tables, chairs, a whiteboard, a flipchart, a projector and a home cinema, which can be removed if necessary. So the room can be used for discussions, learning sessions, philosophizing, dancing, cooking, organizing and many other things. Both regular and one-off use is possible.
Financing
The room is financed by membership fees from residents of the house and extraordinary members of the association, voluntary donations and rental fees.

How to support
People who like our ideas can support us in different ways or become part of our project.
House purchase/direct loan
For the purchase and the renovation of our house we are looking for people who want to give us direct loans and invest their money wisely.
